My Story

With over twenty years’ experience as a chartered physiotherapist, I feel lucky to be doing a job that still inspires me, the job satisfaction is immense. I opened the practice in 2001, at this time I was working as a team physiotherapist for the England Boxing Team, interspersed with work for Team GB. I travelled the world over about 5 years covering the World and European championships several times at varying age categories, team preparation for the Olympics and Commonwealth Games, many of the athletes I worked with back then are now famous household names, several of them are Olympic Gold medallists, and it is great to see them doing well in their chosen sports (and sometimes celebrity game shows!)

I have worked with just about every sport I can think of over the years from climbers to rugby players, over the past decade I have increasingly worked with runners and elite riders in the equestrian sports, and more recently with regional level netball players. The key to treating sports people is not just treating the injury, but working out the mechanics of the sport in relation to the injury as well as looking for faulty training patterns.

Treating sports related injuries probably only makes up 30% of my working day, the rest of the day is spent treating musculoskeletal injuries that often are caused by injury from our lifestyle. These are often the injuries that are the most complex but rewarding to treat.

In the early years after qualifying I spent time as a junior and then senior II physiotherapist at South Tyneside Trust, later working at the Freeman Hospital and Durham University Hospital (was Dryburn), I completed my full rotations through different specialities, however I knew early on that I wanted to specialise in Musculoskeletal Medicine. I was lucky enough to work with some renowned musculoskeletal clinicians early on in my career, and they passed their love of their work on to me.

Since moving into private practice in 2001 I have enjoyed the challenges of building a practice, I am proud that we have managed to do it through word of mouth, as recommendation is the highest praise in my opinion. The established clinic in Sedgefield is thriving and we are building a good reputation in our clinic in Belmont (Durham).
